While Europeans began relocating to Coquitlam during the 1860s the area has been occupied by native peoples for more than 9,000 years. The name Coquitlam is derived from the Coast Salish term Kwikwetlem which roughly translates to “red fish up the river” (which may be an ancient reference to salmon in the area). Today, Coquitlam is a peaceful, largely residential city of some 126,000 inhabitants that lies just to the east of Vancouver and extends north into the Pinecone Burke Provincial Park along the banks of the Pitt River. The city has a mix of residential and business structures, detached homes, soaring condominium developments and apartment blocks where its 126,000 inhabitants live.

Geographically the city may have one of the most diverse topologies in British Columbia which makes it especially challenging for residential and commercial moving companies in Coquitlam. The gently sloping terrain near the Fraser River gives way to an area of higher ground known as “the Bulge” as you move northward. And some of the city’s newest residents live in a mountainside development known as Westwood Plateau. The far north of the city is still largely undeveloped and mountainous. Because of its proximity to Vancouver and the presence of commuter rail lines like the Vancouver SkyTrain Coquitlam has been forced to institute a number of parking regulations in recent years aimed at preventing commuters from parking on city streets and taking the train to their jobs in downtown Vancouver.

One effect of these regulations has been to make things more challenging for moving companies in Coquitlam who must often obtain permits in order to move commercial customers. Residential moving in Coquitlam is typically a less regulation intensive process but Coquitlam movers must still be mindful of local resident parking laws and take extra precautions when performing business and residential moving in Coquitlam in areas where the terrain is less hospitable. In parts of the city that are fairly remote moving companies in Coquitlam often need to deal with snowy roads during the winter months. This adds an extra dimension of risk when it comes to loading and unloading on steep terrain.
